HOW CANNABIS WORKS
OUR ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM
The human body's endocannabinoid system consists of a network of cell receptors which can be activated by naturally occurring molecules found in cannabis plant – THC and CBD. The endocannabinoid system contains CB1 receptors – which are most densely concentrated in parts of the brain and central nervous system, and less densely found throughout the rest of the body. CB2 receptors, on the other hand, are less densely located in the brain regions, and more concentrated in the peripheral nervous system and organs. THC binds mainly to CB1 while CBD indirectly interacts with CB1 and CB2. The mapping of these receptors fits well with the diverse range of symptoms and conditions that are found to respond to medical cannabis.
A KEY REGULATOR
The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating many bodily functions including: blood pressure, immunity, stress, mood, inflammation, sleep, pain response, neurotoxicity, and digestive functions. Research into medicinal cannabis and specific conditions is ongoing, with new insights and treatment recommendations emerging.
